A Kitchen Container Garden for Beginners

I used to believe that I didn’t have a “green thumb.” But how times have changed! Last year, I fell in love with gardening when I decided to relieve myself of pressure to make everything perfect and instead attempted gardening for the joy of it. I planted pretty, low-maintenance flowers that I looked forward to tending, and I experienced the reward of having a thriving garden!

This spring, I’ve decided to try my hand at a little kitchen garden, because, well, I want to! Haha. I am by no means a gardening expert or a “natural,” which I think makes me an excellent candidate to encourage my fellow beginners to start a garden of their own! I had a lot of old pots around my property that the previous owner left me, so I cleaned them out, filled them with organic potting soil and fertilizer, and popped over to Lowe’s/Home Depot to get the plants! I also am trying my hand at composting to reduce waste and get some free “food” for my plants!

This is what’s currently growing in my kitchen garden! These seeds and plant starters are all SO cheap and easily grown. You can start a similar garden in a small box on your patio or kitchen window.

❤️🌿 Links to the tools and goodies I have purchased on Amazon but all of my plants are from Tractor Supply, Home Depot, or Lowes! ❤️🌿

How I’m Growing Everything

  1. Soil - I used the same soil mix for literally everything and it’s SO easy to do! It’s a 1:1 ratios of organic compost and organic raised bed/potting mix. All of the plants I have personally planted are thriving with this!

  2. Fertilizer - I love, and I do mean love, the Espoma Organic Fertilizers. I have four different types I use for each plant’s individual needs. I’m also growing two fruit trees in pots so wish me luck on that. haha

  3. Water - I’m hand watering everything this year because I’m a glutton for punishment. Next year, I will install a drip system, but I was too overwhelmed and intimidated to try that this year. XD

You can shop the Fernwood Kitchen Garden on Amazon. I only shared products I actually purchased and use in my garden because there are a lot of things (like the plants themselves) that are much cheaper when purchased locally!

As summer approaches, I’ll have more plants to show you guys! Caleb and I are spending a lot of time outside with the kids these days, getting our fields ready to grow more fruits and vegetables, and fingers crossed blackberries!

I hope this inspires you to begin a garden; however big or small you go, the reward of watching something you’ve cared for grow and thrive is worth the sweat, I can assure you!

Have A Royal Day!!
