Recently, I have been teaching my daughter Lily (3) and son Will (1) about the marvelous outdoor world of animals, plants, fungi, and weather. As the Texas weather is warming up, there are so many ways to help a child learn about their surroundings but I have rounded up five different activities I have already done with my kiddos this year that I hope inspires you to get outdoors with your littles!

Lunch Picnic

This seems like such a little thing but trust me when I say that little kids will be far more likely to eat their vegetables if they can do it outside in the fresh air. Use whatever food your have on hand or purchase fruits or veggies they don’t get to have often!

Stepping Stone Craft

I can’t stress to you how easy it was to do this craft! Lily asks me multiple times a day to go outside and stand on her stepping stone and if that isn’t a great reason to make one I don’t know what is!

Indoor Terrarium

For those of you in chillier climates, bringing a bit of nature inside may be best! We absolutely loved doing this terrarium in January. The colored pebbles actually glow in the dark, the seeds sprouted in three days, and the stickers didn’t peel off!

Sidewalk Chalk

This may seem super obvious but sidewalk chalk and bubbles are SO cheap, you can buy them at the dollar store and can entertain kids for hours. Pro Tip - Make a REALLY long hopscotch, like 25-30 tiles long!

Foraging

I love love love to take my kids on long afternoon walks with their nature bags and pick up acorns, dandelions, and cool leaves. We will talk about the buzzing bees, little mushrooms growing, and the insects on the tree branches. You can do this at a park if you don’t have a yard and find just as many goodies!

So there are just a few of the things we have done so far this year to connect with nature and learn about animals and good stewardship! Most are super super easy to do and all of them are very inexpensive or free! I hope this little post inspires you to go out and enjoy the outdoors with the little people in your life!
